As part of the completed NeuGenWälz research project of the two research institutes IWM of RWTH Aachen University and Fraunhofer ILT (EFRE project 800665), the composition of standardized high-speed steels was modified by means of Calphad calculations. In this project, two of these promising alloys are to be qualified for processing by LPBF.
The objectives are the development of an adapted LPBF process control for complex structures made of high-speed steel, the integration into the process chain "LPBF-HIP quenching and tempering" as well as the proof of a high fatigue strength and abrasive wear resistance.
The development of design guidelines for complex components and production using LPBF, guidelines for machining, recommendations for powder recycling, compilation of mechanical characteristic values for data sheets, recommendations for quenching and tempering, and HIP redensification are intended to enable companies to introduce LPBF processing of high-speed steels in their own business areas with minimal business risks. With the support of PA, demonstrators such as holders for indexable inserts, races for rolling bearings or dies for sheet metal forming are selected for processing with LPBF in the course of the project, adapted in design, manufactured along the process chain and subjected to an application test.
