The number of available materials for additive manufacturing using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is very limited. Consequently, alloy development is costly, as small batches have to be atomized as a special material. Long waiting times must also be expected due to the delivery times of powder suppliers.
- New materials are to be developed by mixing available powders, so that time and costs can be saved by increasing independence from powder suppliers
- The materials must be homogeneous and have good mechanical properties
- As an example, 2 new materials are to be developed: Corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant tool steel and super duplex steel with improved seawater resistance
- Focus of the project:
- From which available powders these materials can be realized in principle
- Which powder fractions have to be used for a homogeneous microstructure?
- Can partially non-spherical powders also be used?
- How must the process be adapted for processing powder mixtures in comparison to pre-alloyed materials?
- Do components made of powder mixtures have the same mechanical properties as components made of pre-alloyed materials?
