Motivation

The number of available materials for additive manufacturing using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is very limited. Consequently, alloy development is costly, as small batches have to be atomized as a special material. Long waiting times must also be expected due to the delivery times of powder suppliers.

Goals

  • New materials are to be developed by mixing available powders, so that time and costs can be saved by increasing independence from powder suppliers
  • The materials must be homogeneous and have good mechanical properties


Project contents

  • As an example, 2 new materials are to be developed: Corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant tool steel and super duplex steel with improved seawater resistance
  • Focus of the project:
    • From which available powders these materials can be realized in principle
    • Which powder fractions have to be used for a homogeneous microstructure?
    • Can partially non-spherical powders also be used?
    • How must the process be adapted for processing powder mixtures in comparison to pre-alloyed materials?
    • Do components made of powder mixtures have the same mechanical properties as components made of pre-alloyed materials?
