Analysis of Residual Stresses Via Strain Gauges

Analysis of Residual Stresses Via Strain Gaugese can determine macroscopic residual stresses, residual stresses of first order. To analyse the component Strain gauge rosettes are applied on the surface. If the coherence of the part is being dissolved by cutting, the residual stresses lead to macroscopic deformations. The strain gauges are measuring the state of plain strain on the surface. With the knowledge of the Young’s modulus of the material, the state of plain stress can be calculated. It has to be noticed, that the stress values are averaged throughout the free cut volume.
